Free Motion Quilting Challenge - March

I have been practicing this month's free motion quilting challenge using Ann Fahl's tutorial. This was so much fun! Not sure how well you can see, but I tried flowers, hearts, stars and swirls. I had to get over making loops and actually crossing my thread. I'm used to meandering where you're not supposed to cross threads. It was such fun! I found it easier than meandering. It felt like anything goes and it still looked great. I would definitely use loops to background quilt. I'm happy I tried it and can actually add variation to my quilts now.

Has anyone tried Leah Day's wholecloth project? I started it but I can definitely see that it will take many attempts to master this technique. I'm not used to sewing on a line. I'm used to meandering quite freely. You have to have so much more control to follow a line. I have veered off so many times! I'm not sure I can even post it. It's a learning experience and really looks like I need to learn!

  1. Hi, Nice work here. I'm also in both the FMQ challenge and working on Leah's wholecloth. Seems hard to keep stitch length consistent with all the stops and starts of turning the cloth each time we change direction. Her hint on lining up and running parallel with the right index finger as it's holding the cloth did help with the straight lines. It's another whole challenge! And Leah is our tutorial expert for May - can't wait to see that.

    1. Thank you for the nice comment, Pat! I definitely agree that Leah's wholecloth is a whole different challenge! I think it's wonderful we're trying it and I'm sure, with practice, we'll improve. My stitches were so tiny in some spots. I suppose I'll just have to keep practicing!!

  2. Your FMQ continues to get better and better! I especially like the hearts.

P.S. I like the reply feature on your comments. You'll have to tell me how you did that.

  4. Looks like you have been doing a lot of practicing! I love all the motifs - and you did a great job on all of them. I love the loops and twirls with the stars.

Thanks for stopping by my blog! I am working on the binding for the string scrappy quilt – almost done! I hope you are getting some sunshine. It has been raining for 2 days now.
