Twister Progress

My twister blocks are done! I free motion quilted feathers in each blade of the twister block. It really didn't take as long as I thought it would. I found my rhythm and just kept going. I stitched in the ditch around the actual square, not the twister. It was impossible for me to find a way to outline the twister without back tracking a million times or breaking my thread. I opted to outline the block. I want the quilt to lay nice and flat. So far, I'm quite happy with the results.
My next question is what to do with these borders!! I think I'm going to free motion a scroll in the skinny red border. I've done it before and like how it looks. I'm probably going to end up stippling the large outer border. I was even thinking of outlining some of the large flowers and then stippling around them. However, I'm not sure what to do with the blue border around the twister blocks. I wanted something small to showcase the feathers. Any ideas? Let me know! I'm looking through books right now trying to come up with something I like and feel comfortable quilting.

  1. This is so lovely! If it were my quilt, I'd be thinking about feathers in that blue border, ala Patsy Thompson's December tutorial in the FMQ Challenge. That solid blue deserves a great quilting motif where the design can really shine!

    1. I'm going to take a look at her tutorial. I'm just not sure my feathers are good enough! They will really show in that light blue fabric. I may need to practice a bit first.

  2. Beautiful. Looking at it makes me want to sew up a twister. I don't have any quilting answers for you. Sorry.

  3. I have two sizes of the Twister template and have yet to use either one. I love the look but just never "got around to" using them. Love yours!

    1. Thanks, Connie! I have many little tools that seemed so wonderful that I have yet to use! I think we all like to get these neat little tools but have trouble finding the time to use them!

  4. It's lovely! Not always easy to decide on how to quilt... I agree with Quilting Babcia; since the blue border is solid it should have a great quilting motif so why not feathers as the twisters? I think scrolls for the narrow border will be nice.

  5. What very fun feathers! I love twister quilts--despite the fact that I didn't particularly enjoy making one. Yours is going to be great!

    1. Thanks, Dora! My feathers aren't as elegant as yours but it's my first try! Hope I get as good as you!

  6. Lovely quilting, Rosemary. How about just plain channel quilting to offset the fancy feathers? Julierose

  7. Dear Rosemary it is what I would like to do! Did you used commercial templete or did you have made yourself pattern?
    (sorry for my English).
    Thank you. Lidia

    1. Lidia, I used the Twister ruler. There's a large one, which I used for this quilt, and a small one called Lil Twister. It's made by CS Designs. Many quilt shops carry them or you can buy online. Amazon also carries it. Let me know if you need help finding it. Very easy to use and the results are pretty close to perfect as far as piecing goes.
